Just the Beginning

Updated: Oct 10, 2018

I am from a small town in Iowa, called Bettendorf. I have danced since I was three years old doing ballet and tap just like every other little girl in dance. As I got older I started training in other styles of dance and with older girls. When I was 14 years old I told myself I wanted to learn Hip Hop.

Finding Hip Hop

My biggest and inspiration was and is Michael Jackson. My mom couldn't find anyone in our local area who taught hip hop, like the kind I saw on You tube. Because there was no studio I looked on You Tube for tutorials, the Summer going into my freshman year, I found Matt Steffinina, a choreographer based in LA. He made tutorials of his choreography beginner, intermediate, and advanced. I would learn his dances then show them to my mom. She searched everyday to find me a studio where I could take classes, one day she came across a group called Re-FL3X (they were formerly known as RusHour). She called the manager and tried so hard for the manager to allow me to take class, the manager was hesitant because I was 14 and the students were 9. In September 2015 I started taking classes at Re-FL3X. It was the complete opposite of what I was used to. I had to re-train myself on how to move, because I was so stiff. Since then I have been continuously working and training in hip hop.

Read my next blog to find out about how I keep a positive and determined mindset!!
